Ari.Art: A mini gallery presents to you:- Sopan (4 pictures)
Translated: "When speech is conducted by the mind…"
Translated: "Ravishingly swaying my hair in respect"
Translated: "With words and expression, will there be true conversation"
Translated: "Cynical Sweetness"Nope. The above is not meant to flow like a poem, nor be a comic strip in sequence. The emphasis of the whole display is a mixture of Malay culture, where I am portraying Sopan; a noun used in the Malay community representing decency and moral. Sopan speaks of many interpretations on respect, modesty and affability of a person, indeed.
The pictures above depict a focused subject, whom a woman was chosen, to symbolise a simple, pure meaning to the whole theme for Sopan. Captured in shots showing barely any skin nor hair and purposely made mysterious, both outdoor and indoor shots, to translate to the masses of how in a Malay community, a woman can blend with surroundings comfortably with their soft, conservative nature.
In the olden days, as to how customs were born and made adaptable through time, most Malay women had since worn headgears not only to glorify their status as a devoted Muslim but to signify their purity and pride representing the Malay race by choosing to place their hair in discreet. Not only that brought forward the identity of Muslims but adorning the hijab or scarf over their heads eventually merged as a similar culture to the Malays as part of their identity, fashion and lifestyle.
Sopan, a wonderful word that can be used and described in many forms, in many different ways to express its greatness yet humble meaning. Let the flexibility of Sopan or 'kesopanan' embrace you into the beautiful world of Malay culture. With that I present to you, ladies & gentlemen;
