Rumours had it that the guy in the black top in the picture on the right (name is kept confidential in order to protect the already downtrodden Malay race haha..) has high hopes in becoming a mega superstar in Malaysia.“I have always dreamed of walking the red carpet as I step off my limo… cameras awaiting my best angles and fans screaming my name,” exclaimed the young Singaporean who believed that trying his luck in his hometown will never get him near his passion.
“My reason is simple. I can’t sell here in Singapore because I am a Malay. Suriachannel is poor and the malay market is at it’s worst end with most people, especially majority of the malays, not willing to purchase original CDs when downloads and CD copying are available at every corner in today’s technology.
“I’ve heard many friends and had spoken to quite a number of activists in the entertainment industry and they all uttered the same thing. Malay musicians/ artistes in Singapore cannot make a living. They cannot survive with music or art alone. They can die.”
“It’s either they slog through their full-time job (or jobs) and whack overtime to earn enough to record an album or perform part-time in small gigs with pathetic show allowance, that is if they get paid by the fame-seeking, money-hungry and dishonest organisers. Furthermore the entertainment scene in Singapore is dominated by the chinese market with a lot of talent and reality shows catering to the mandarin-speaking.
“I am proud that Singapore at least made the efforts of promoting our own home-grown heroes through talent shows and scouting but I guess what we see in today’s practice is that, for the entertainment business to succeed, you have to have a huge following. I am not igniting any racial discrimination here but I am glad and even proud of the channel 8, channel u or even channel 5 in mediacorp tv for taking advantage of the growing market for local talents unlike what I observed, as an audience, for suriachannel and their radio stations.
“As big or huge you might imagine my dreams of pursuing my career as a performer in Malaysia, I fully understand that it is obviously not an easy task. Many of my peers had been rejected straight in the face and the growing amount of talents in our neighbouring country doesn’t help us Singaporeans much either.
“But I am still positive of the existing competition, or rejection which I will encounter definitely, as my main focus is to at least be heard at a ready audience with a huge promising market namely the malay music industry. I am keeping my options as well as my eyes open. It is not a very clean business to indulge in and being a green horn makes me very vulnerable to falling flat straight to the ground before even smelling anything,” added the Star Wannabe, as how he preferred to be addressed for now.
When asked about his chances and how confident he is in clinching a deal or a contract with a recording company, blatantly he answered,
“You think I am Tammy from NYP is it, who can be a star overnight over a few minutes? and I thought I’ve mentioned it just now already? Go and rewind your tape and listen to it again!”
Perhaps the Star Wannabe already have that natural self as a star… rude, uncivilised and stuck-up. Not so original as a star I should say… but nevertheless I am wishing that guy all the best of luck in the world. Goodluck!

some of what he said is true. it is difficult to survive just based on music alone here in singapore. not many have triumphed.

Maybe I should go to Malaysia to make a live, not to sing or anything, just to make a living there. Why? I also don’t know myself…hmm…lol…***talking crap right now***
Who you talking about any way? They’ve got such an attitude. Send them to me, I’ll sort them out!

Tun_Jebat 8:02 pm on March 1, 2006 | # |
what a funny disturbing picture.. Hehe.. But yah it’s true, if you want to survive in Singapore, you’ve to work double or maybe tripple? Hmm..
It’s true that your talent alone is not enough, you’ve to got the looks, simply enough X-factor and depending on your luck too..
If you could attract the channel 5 mediacorp, than it’s better.. Like Suhaimi Yusof.. But still, it does not promise us anything..
Whatever it is, everywhere u go, u still have to work hard.. I mean, if you go to Malaysia even still.. Do you think they will gladly accept Singaporeans? If you watch Popumenteri, you should know how artist like Hetty Sarlene really works hard to survive..
Done.
P/s: Sorry eh grammer aku nih byk kena dibetulkan.. nyahaha..

On the whole the entertainment scene here sucksss !!! ada artiste back stabbing artiste yg lain …. ada artiste yg iri hati atas kejayaan seorang artiste yang lain….how to live??? btw, all these are Malay S’pore artistesssss … not forgetting ” yang ‘membodek’”. (sori the words used). It’s true. Has happened and is still happening. Anyway who am I to judge . . . I leave it up to the individual to see, feel, think & analyze….
(Ari jangan GAM aku , kay!! Dari giving kommen… * senyum)

it seems at times as if the collective mind of the masses is only able to digest a handful of malay talent operating (in the shadows) in the mainstream media at any point of time. at this current moment, we have suhaimi yusof, taufik batisah and the ever bankable aaron aziz. and of course it’s also great that we have racial chameleon gurmit as a trump card. any more than that and people can’t seem to tell us apart. (as in the case of africanamericans in shows like the apprentice or americanidol, there always seem to be enough space for only one guy and one girl.)
however i do believe that talent (true blue talent) will shine through no matter what the obstacles. which explains the case for the up-and-coming Malay guy in Arts Central’s Nine Lives.
instead of complaining, perhaps we should rise to the challenge. the environment is ripe for eliminating mediocre performers and whittling competition down to a select few, who will only reach the peak due to a combination of talent and sheer perseverance.
am i an idealist?

Well, I think that a real star and entertainer is not one who seeks fame. Rather, it’s a person who seeks to shine and entertain. It’s true that it’s hard for people to make it big in Singapore. But you don’t necessarily have to make big bucks or be in the limelight to be a star-entertainer right?
So you only get to play in small gigs and stuff. But if people enjoy your stage presence, they like what you do and are overwhelmed by your shining personality, who needs money to see the smiles upon the faces of your adoring fans? Even if they’re small in number. It’s not about how many people see you. It’s about how much people appreciate you. And sometimes, one person’s appreciation can mean a whole lot more than the bright flashes of the paparazzi.
That there is an example of a person hungry for an easy life and sees stardom as a way to get that easy life. I’d say he’s dead wrong to think so. No single way of life is easy.
And besides, look up at the night sky. A billion stars out there, how many of those billions of shining bright balls of light do you recognise and can name easily? As is the case for the stars out there, so is it for the stars down here.
As always, an interesting read. ;)

Wak rase lebih baik lah budak watanabe ni gi seberang tambak, pergi indon pun baik tapi tak realistik sikit, but again nothing is impossible. Whether he makes it or not, at least he tries his best.
Wak rase kalau dia duk je kat sini tak buek apo apo , takut talent dia tu berfungus dan berkarat.
Wak tak nampak gambor budak watanabe, computer wak ni mcm wak dah tua.

felina™:
So who had triumphed?
nora:
Habis Taufik Batisah belum apa-apa boleh yekkkk.. anggek…. so si dekni ikut lah…
Suraya:
You can have bigger houses in malaysia….. ahah!
cheq:
Dia bilang aku yang dia berterima kaseh dengan wish kau terhadap dia tu cheq… It’s better late than never even when the chances are very slim… because at least dia dah pernah try.
awan:
Tak cuba tak tahu. Dah cuba pon belum tahu , awan… U ada contacts ke?
Ann:
True…. True… You have a great day too, sis!
Linda NJ:
Dektu lagi mcm siakkkk! Terigat aku Tok Siak berbual dalam kereta..
Tun Jebat:
Cerita lah sikit pasal Hetty tu… aku mana ada follow sangat perkembangan..
Joe:
Takkan lah aku nak ‘gam’ kau pulak… But what you say could be true although kita takder proof on the whole thing.
ridj:
You are not the only one who is idealistic on this whole talent vs face issue. If only the fans/ audience can identify what is true talent plus good attitude plus everything else that could make the artiste a real talent.
pseudodrow:
But if you weigh art to effort, entertainers are priceless…
lady lee:
A lot of them tried, talented or not… so does your kudos go to the ones who are labelled as hopefuls as well?
Wak Jon fuckerella:
Wak boleh pergi sim lim untuk upgrade komputer wak.. saya boleh temankan wak since kita sama-sama wak…
Nur:
Rabak tengok sorang!
acik:
Kalau suria baca comment kau ni kan bagus..
