The good guys of Kampung Ubi did this compilation and tribute to Geylang Serai, I wouldn't say historical, more of a memorable place in Singapore. I respect their effort in the amount of dedication and research they did to come out with the end product which is a hard cover book, well-illustrated and documented entitled, "The Heart of Geylang Serai" but there are a few issues I just could not stay hush about when I browsed through the content.
Firstly, the picture above. I shouldn't say much. You know, I know the meaning of 'Gelang' and it does not jolly well mean 'Anklet'. Can all of us spread the news and not let the ignorant be lead by the stupid? Wonder who the fucking translater and editor is.
Secondly, I have had enough of the word extremist. And lastly, I hate politics. This is what you get when a tribute book involves politics and this page below spoils the whole lot of it.
Must they really add that? Without question perhaps it might be a good proposal to shift Kampung Melayu to Kampung Glam in terms of revenue. Yes, especially the high rental and ERP charges to step into that place.First of all, how can we be sure that Kampung Melayu in Kampung Glam will be a sure crowd puller in terms of its new location? What difference does it make to a tourist who comes to Singapore who plans to explore? People do not know Chinatown or Little India if those places aren't promoted at all. Does that mean to say that we have to shift Science Centre or Haw Par Villa or Pulau Ubin to the central area to attract tourists? No!
There are a lot of tourist attractions that aren't really making money and why aren't these places targeted at or being proposed of a new location? Kampung Melayu sucks, I cannot deny that but isn't it a choice from our own people, especially the Geylang Serai regulars to make it turn out that way? They are happy with Kampung Melayu and they made it clear by choosing not to move from there. Even if Kampung Melayu were to be shifted, I believe in whatever name or building the old Kampung Melayu be replaced, I am sure people will still flock at that area because they love that place.
And that new Kampung Melayu will just be another ghost town as it is now happening in Kampung Glam. Don't spoil the moment of tribute. This is like a bad reunion dinner where everyone walked out of the dining table with clenched fists and pulling long faces. And don't forget to get that meaning of Geylang or Gelang… right!

if i didn't read the sidenote, i would have definately question why the same post again. layout is too clean.. but heck, as long as i can enjoy a good reading out of your blog, tak kisahlah kan, layout puteh sangat ke, clean sangat ke, komen page sampai buat mata aku kero ke.. just keep writing!
